Wisdom Brings Success

Tom Cronin Success Magazine LTD.

So where do we find wisdom?

Most people have no idea how to define success, let alone how to achieve it. Many of us believe the old saying, “The goal is to see who can die with the most toys.” Others come to believe that success is a reflection of how much power they have. But we know that most people in our society who are supposedly successful with money, power, and possessions are not happy; many die bankrupt after a volatile life. So where do we find wisdom? Albert Einstein, whom many consider one of the smartest people of the 20th century once said, “Wisdom is not the product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” Einstein seems to insinuate that wisdom is a never-ending search, that once you think you have it, you find you need to do more work to acquire it. While Einstein said that we find wisdom through a life-long search, others try to find it in much simpler places. Leo Buscaglia made a lot of sense when he said this about wisdom: “We seem to gain wisdom more readily through our failures than through our successes. We always think of failure as the antithesis of success, but it isn’t. Success often lies just the other side of failure.” I think most of us know what he was talking about. I know that I have sometimes learned a lot more through my mistakes than my successes. Another person who could say the same thing was Solomon, who, through writing Ecclesiastes, looked back on his life and, through his wisdom, showed us the mistakes he made so we would not do the same. The wise man in Ecclesiastes 10:10 wrote: “If the axe is dull, and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but wisdom brings success.”
The person who does not use their intelligence must work harder than the person who prepares and works hard toward a goal.
“Successinbusinessrequires training and discipline and hard work. But if you’re not frightened by these things, the opportunities are just as great today as they ever were.”—David Rockefeller
“The first requisite for success is to develop the ability to focus and apply your mental and physical energies to the problem at hand – without growing weary. Because such

thinking is often difficult, there seems to be no limit to which some people will go to avoid the effort and labor that is associated with it”—Thomas Edison
You choose to succeed by applying the principles of success in your life or any area you desire victory. Success is not guaranteed to every human who walks the planet. However, the potential for success is bequeathed to each of us at birth. Success is not an accident or the result of believing that life owes it to you. Success is not: power, fame, wealth, prosperity, happiness, or independence. Once gained, there is no guarantee that the success you have achieved will be maintained indefinitely in any recognizable or anticipated form. If success is lost, it is not destined to elude us forever. Success is a choice. You need to know these principles. When you know these principles; what they are, what they mean to your life and how to put them into action, you will find that success and its by-products—good health, happiness, wealth, and satisfying relationships—will be yours.
“Many receive advice; only the wise profit from it.” Publilius Syrus
Prosperity can be achieved by the following keys to success:
Vision: We are inspired by those who dream and follow their heart’s desires.
Purpose: Have specific goals in your life. Write down your plans for success.
Preparation: Achieve your goals through education and acquiring knowledge.
Perseverance: Never quit. Always strive toward your goals.
Seek wisdom: Surround yourself with others who have taken the right paths in life.
Resourcefulness: When others quit, find a way to gain new energy and strength to finish the race.
Drive: Once you have achieved each step toward your goal, continue to strive to a greater achievement.
Breathe: Take a step back along the way and assess your situation to ensure that your energies and strength are directed toward your task.
Finish the race: Secure your future and complete the desires of your heart.
Give thanks: Once you have achieved your goals, take a moment to reflect and give thanks to God for his blessings and your good health.
“Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture...Do not build up obstacles in your imagination.”— Norman Vincent Peale
“Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.”—Ted Turner
“I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.”—Proverbs 4:11-12
When you make your plans for your life and business, think big. Plan for success. You need to stir the blood and inspire others to dream dreams; if not, your own vision will not be realized. Design larger-than-life strategies with great vision for a purpose and know that righteous consistent plans, once confirmed, will never perish.

Are you running your business, or is your business running you?

When was the last time that you could take a vacation, turn your cell phone off, and not have to check your e-mail every two hours? Do you wake up at night only to remember tasks that needed to be completed or a client request that you forgot to delegate? Have you had to cancel family plans to meet the demands of your business? Are you running your business or is your business running you?
We like to think we are in control of our businesses, but in most instances the business is running the entrepreneur’s life. Without realizing it, our businesses are dictating terms and controlling our lives and, unless we make the necessary changes, it will continue until we attempt to sell or go out of business.
When I ask my clients if they have a business plan, a PR plan or a budget plan, I frequently get the same response, “Nope, I just work off last year’s numbers and try to improve.” I have found that 90% of businesses do not have a formal plan. This is a recipe for disaster. They somehow make it from year to year, but that’s the problem ... they just make it. When times get hard—a recession hits or gas prices increase—these are the businesses that go under.
According to the SBA, only 50% of new small businesses survive the first year and only 11% survive five or more years. The main reasons for business failure are as follows:
1. Management inefficiency and lack of experience by the owner
2. No business plan 3. Insufficient capital 4. Failure to define and understand your market 5. Failure to anticipate or react to competition, technology, or
changes in the marketplace using new PR, web design, and
advertising 6.Poor business location, poor customer service, improper
pricing 7.Owners sole dependence on self/ not seeking professional
assistance 8. Overexpansion
The number one reason why businesses succeed or fail is because the business owner did not take the time to conduct a feasibility analysis, market plan, and business plan.
So what is the remedy for removing this conundrum?
Success Public Relations: Keys to Success!
We can work with you to achieve your business goals. Whether you are just starting your business, or are looking to finally manage your business instead of it running you.
Success PR will:
1. Prepare professional business analysis 2. Design professional public relations plan to include:
a. Business plan b. Market plan c. Advertising plan
3.Review management criteria and advise on needs analysis 4.Design website 5.Refer to professional legal, payroll, and CPA firms for
advisement on form of business, contracts, and business
and tax evaluation 6.Prepare five-year plan for business profitability 7.Establish procedures and management manual
Once you have established your Success PR plan, you will be able to manage your business effectively and efficiently.

Inspiration: Who or what inspires you?

Tom Cronin Success Magazine LTD.

Who inspires you on that cold winter’s day when you just don’t want to face the world? What makes you push on through all of life’s obstacles encouraging you to realize your dream? Each of has different stories to tell of those who have pulled us from our depths of despair and have inspired us to have the will and spirit to win. Are you inspired by family, friends, acts of courage by others, inspirational leaders, or divine guidance?
Life has paved no smooth road for any of us. We have each chosen our path in life and must live with the results of our decisions. There are times when we make poor choices and there are times that we make remarkable ones. The more trials we must encounter, the more momentous and the higher in inspiration our lives will be. We are more than we think we are. Every individual has unlimited potential. Each of us has the power to be whatever it is we desire. You can live the life you have always wanted. Your success is relative to the intensity of your belief in yourself.
“Flaming enthusiasm, backed up by horse sense and persistence, is the qualitythatmostfrequently makes for success.”
Dale Carnegie
Inspiration is a principle that we create in our minds that paints a portrayal of success that no one can take away from us. When someone is inspired, they change. They transform before our eyes. They do things that seem herculean and often against what might be popular. Colossal things happen when people are inspired. Inspiration will keep us moving forward when we are at our lowest point. Inspiration is what we feel deep in our soul when we want something
so bad that we’re willing to do anything to reach our goal. It is our own driving force leading us to succeed, or at times it is divine intervention that propels us in a new direction. When I began this magazine, I had never written an article that was published, never took a photograph beyond a family photo, never sold advertising or designed a plan for an artistic layout. But I was inspired to create this magazine to inspire others. Inspiration refers to an unconscious burst of creativity; the word means “breathed upon.” If you look at those in our history that have been inspired, they have taken a dream or passion deep within their soul and have then acted upon their desires and made them a reality. Whether it be Mozart composing a symphony, or Churchill inspiring his country of Great Britain to never, never give up to the Nazis, each of us can achieve the life that we are destined by our creator to achieve—no matter what the odds that are against us. Inspiration is the product of grace; it is unsolicited, unrestrained, and alluring. When someone is inspired they can achieve the highest plateaus of life, whatever their heart’s desire. Life is not about finding yourself, it is about creating yourself. When we choose to live the life we were chosen for, then we will have a purpose.
“Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.” Leon J. Suenes
There are times when we are unsure of the direction we are to take in life. To discover our inner dream and get enthused, seek things that gratify us, we must step back for a moment and look at the larger image. Inspiration will provide us with proven success ideologies that are simple,
inspirational, and motivational to help us achieve better results in our relationships, work, and business.
Get out of your mindless day-to day- activities so as to command more out of life. Realize your inner potential and arouse the undeveloped desires within you. Have higher dreams and set better goals.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe
harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. “ Mark Twain
Seek out the inspirational mentor who will give you a clear point of view or vision of what’s possible in your life, and then find the motivational leader who believes in you and supports you reaching your goals. You can become the success that you always knew you could become; you can be the inspirational mentor for the next generation.
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the
noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Steve Jobs

PROFIT PLANNING: ZERO-BASED BUDGETING

Tom Cronin Success Magazine LTD.

As we begin our new year hopefully you have developed your business profit plan and budget for this year. If you have not, you are not alone. I have found that less than 10% of all businesses have a proper business plan and less than 3% have a PR plan to accentuate their business plan. These are scary statistics, because if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. Opening a business and shooting from the hip is a sure way to doomed failure. You would never build a home without approved architectural plans. You would never put the roof on your building first; of course not, you would first have a set of plans then start your structure with a firm concrete foundation. The same must hold true for starting a new business venture. So how do we prepare for our successful business future?
Profit planning creates the steps taken to achieve the desired level of profit accomplished through the preparation of a number of budgets. This communicates management’s plan so that all parts of the organization are working together toward the same goals. To be completely effective, a good budgeting system must provide for both planning and control. The process involves the creation and implementation of the broad objectives of your organization, the detailed objectives, and a short-term and long-term financial plan. Budgets force owners to think about and plan for the future. In the absence of a budget, many owners would spend all of their time dealing with daily emergencies and putting out fires.
When I was in the corporate operations world, most firms used the traditional approach to budgeting; the managers start with last year’s budget and expenses then add to it according to anticipated needs. This is an incremental approach to budgeting in which the previous year’s budget is taken for granted as a baseline. This approach is called incremental budgeting or rolling budgets. This technique is easy but antiquated. It never allowed for new projects or for new innovative thinking. This old method only allowed for last year’s numbers, without thinking toward a new horizon or future goal. I introduced a new concept that changed the whole approach to their marketing,
PR, sales, and productivity. I introduced zero-based budgeting. It revolutionized the company and we brought them from five years of deficits to profitability in one year.
Zero-based budgeting is a technique that helps enhance good planning and decision-making for your business. In other words, it reverses the working process of the traditional forecasting methods you may have been accustomed to. In traditional incremental budgeting, business owners justify only increases over the previous year’s budget and what has been already spent is automatically approved. By contrast, in zero-based budgeting, every division’s purpose is reviewed comprehensively and all expenditures must be approved, rather than only increases. No reference is made to the previous level of expenditure. The zero-base is indifferent to whether the total budget is increasing or decreasing.
Zero-based budgeting also refers to the identification of a project or new PR or advertising campaign, and then funding resources to complete the task independent of current resourcing. For example, if you have been using newspaper print advertising for the last twenty-five years and you had a budget of $50,000 for that last year, but it is no longer producing the results you have
come to expect, you must make a change immediately and decide where those funds should be spent. Television and radio are dying and not giving you the new sales they used to and that expenditure was $25,000 last year. So do you just throw it into the coffers and hope for the best, or do you develop a new plan from a zero-base to determine what monies should be expensed and where they should be spent. The correct method of the zero-based budget demands that you lay out a sales plan and budget what you need to achieve a profit. In order to create a zero-based budget you must complete the following:
1.Determine your fixed costs (mortgage, rent, utilities, fixed salaries, mandatory supplies, and services).
2.Attempt to cut these expense items to the base needed, not just what you spent last year, then implement a savings and expense control plan (make the tough decisions).
3.Ascertain your variable costs. These costs should fluctuate on a needs basis depending on your projects, sales plan, and new market or PR plan.
4.Develop your sales plan based upon: a.Minimum sales to cover your fixed and variable costs (this will be your minimum or base plan. Once you have developed this base plan you will know what your minimum break even point is yearly, monthly, and daily to break even and make a profit).
b.Product sales plan: develop a plan for each of your divisions, each profit center, and each product line.
c.Project sales plan: develop a sales plan for each new initiative, and then allocate the costs necessary to each project to determine if the project will be profitable and when its break even point will be achieved.
5.Allocate sales plans vs. cost plans to show break even and profit centers for each project.
12 SUCCESS february 2011The zero-based budgeting system puts the burden of proof on the manager and demands that each manager justifies the entire budget in detail and prove why he or she should spend the organization’s money in the manner proposed. A “decision package” must be developed by each manager for every project or activity, which includes an analysis of cost, purpose, alternative courses of action, measures of performance, consequences of not performing the activity, and the benefits. For example if the PR manager wants to develop a new web marketing campaign, including a new website, e-mail marketing and webinars, then they would allocate the expenses of each project, determine the projected sales from their effort, and develop the potential profit plan to show the viability of the project. This is proper profit and zero-based budget planning.
The decision packages must be ranked in order of importance once they have been created.Thisallowseachmanagertoidentify priorities, combine decision packages for old and new projects into one ranking, and allows top management to evaluate and compare the needs of individual divisions to make funding allocations. In this respect, zero-based budgeting is quite different than traditional incremental or rolling budgets. Rolling budgets give management a concrete number to help make comparisons f rom year to year. However, traditional rolling
budgets have a tendency to create conflict; they can create
an incentive to spend money carelessly in order to justify the next year’s budget. They can also create inefficient operations due to the fact that individual departments or units do not have to justify expenditures based on operations, but only on the prior year’s expenditures. Zero-base budgeting enables a performance assessment to determine whether each project or activity has been performed as efficiently and profitably as planned.
Zero-based budgeting may require an extensive amount of time, money, and paper work, but it does provide a systematic method of addressing an organization’s financial concerns, in turn enabling an organization to better allocate its resources. A combination of zero-based budgets with incremental budgeting that spreads the work of justifying new budgets each cycle is one way to incorporate zero-based budgeting without undue stress for all managers with budgetary responsibility.
Advantages of zero-based budgeting
1.Infuses proactive management decision making toward cost effective planning and profit.
2.Demands efficient allocation of resources based on needs and benefits.
3.Drives managers to find cost effective ways to improve sales and
operations.
4.Detects inflated budgets.
5.Enhances motivation by providing greater initiative and responsibility in decision-making.
6.Increases communication and coordination within the organization.
7.Recognizes and eliminates wasteful and obsolete operations.
8.Identifies opportunities for outsourcing.
9.Compels cost centers to identify their mission and their relationship to overall goals.
10.Provides incentives for upwardly mobile thinking executives and business owners to try new approaches to increasing their sales and reducing their costs.
These are tough times and tough times require tough decisions. Instead of using antiquated methods in a stalled economy, we must be flexible and innovative in our approach to generating new sales and greater profit. The combination of an aggressive market and PR campaign with a new zero-based budget will spawn a new zest for life in your company. The budgeting process speaks volumes about your business strategy and could make the difference between the success and failure of your small business.

The Warrior Spirit Within Us

Tom Cronin Success Magazine LTD.

A warrior is a hunter. The spirit of the warrior is to prepare themselves for conflict or struggle at all times. A warrior is constantly aware of their surroundings; they are always seeking the answer to the problem at hand. They calculate everything. They need to be in control to ensure that their life and those they love or deem to shield are protected. When a warrior is prepared for battle and decides to complete their task, nothing will stop them. A warrior is prepared for death; therefore the outcome of the struggle at hand is of no consequence to them. The essence of their mindset is to succeed and survive and win the struggle before them. Once a warrior is prepared for battle, they can let their spirit flow. They can not be concerned with the cost of their actions. The will to survive the struggle far outweighs the cost to those who try to sway their decision making.
“My life is simple, my food is plain, and my quarters are uncluttered. In all things, I have sought clarity. I face the troubles and problems of life and death willingly. Virtue, integrity and courage
are my priorities. I can be approached, but never pushed; befriended but never coerced; killed but never shamed.” - Yi Sunshin, Last letter to an old friend
The warrior spirit is as protector of their family, their country, and their company. They have a very strong belief system and a desire to protect those who can not defend themselves. The warrior has definite opinions of good vs. evil. The warrior’s greatest challenge comes when they must choose to do what is right within the situation at hand. But once their mind is set, they will ensure that the task is completed, proficiently and without remorse.
“Each Warrior wants to leave the mark of his will, his signature, on important acts he touches. This is not the voice of ego but of the human spirit, rising up and declaring that it has something to contribute to the solution of the hardest problems, no matter how vexing!”- Pat Riley
The warrior focuses on their purpose. They prepare for the imminent struggle at hand and plan for success. They take responsibility for their actions and prepare alternate plans of action depending upon the threat before them. The warrior leaves nothing to chance. Life is a chess game; you must constantly plan three moves out. The warrior views life as a challenge and does not complain when the odds are against them; everyone else thinks of life as a blessing or a curse as if life is about chance and luck.
“Conflict will remain complex and chaotic, and human frailties and irrationality will continue to characterize war’s nature. Just as in the past, the root causes of future conflicts will arise from fear, hatred, greed, honor, and ambition. The human dimension of war defies simple logic. For that reason, understanding as much as possible about this dimension becomes critical to influencing and achieving favorable outcomes in future conflicts.” - US Army study of Human Dimension
“A warrior must only take care that his spirit is not broken.” - Shissai
Our nation is at war and we are blessed to have men and women who serve with the dedication of the warrior spirit. Some have fallen so that you and I can enjoy the freedom that we share every day. It is time for us to become warriors in spirit to assist these men and women who have given their lives, their functional bodies coming home wounded. They are still warriors as they are wounded in body but not in spirit. It is time to reach out to these fine Americans and show them our support’ to help them regain their position in society. They were there for us, now it is time for us to be there for them. The wounded warrior needs support: physical, psychological, and job placement support now more than ever. Remember they were on the front lines with that warrior spirit, not knowing when the next attack would come, when the next RPG or bomb blast would accost them. They have to adjust to society again and they need our help. Be a warrior for them; they stood the test of time and were warriors for us.
It is hard to imagine the evil of this world when we live in peace at home without the threat of war in our backyard. But evil exists and there are forces in this world internally and externally that want to see our way of life obliterated. We must remember, the warrior is as much “sensei,” or teacher as artist and fighter. We must remember that to be successful as entrepreneurs and workers in this great nation, we must strive to act as warriors at all times. Not many of us have the true warrior spirit within us, so we call upon our warriors to protect our loved ones and our land. We must be willing to protect those who have protected us.
“Victory is reserved for those who are willing to pay its price.”- Sun Tzu
“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing.” - Abraham Lincoln

What motivates you to feel successful in life?

Tom Cronin Success Magazine LTD.

What motivates you to feel successful in life? Is it power, money, possessions, the love of your spouse or family? According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, money is a motivator; however its motivating effect is short lived. At higher levels of the hierarchy, praise, respect, recognition, empowerment, and a sense of belonging are far more powerful motivators than money. I have seen in my own life and throughout my career that Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is critical to our desires and feelings of success. If you cannot provide the basic security for yourself, your loved ones and your employees, you cannot have self respect, respect for others, and therefore you cannot attain the higher goals of love, self esteem/recognition, achievement, and then self actualization.

“ We are all motivated by a keen desire for praise, and the better a man is, the more he is inspired to glory.”—Cicero

There are two motivating categories. Intrinsic motivation is motivation driven by an interest or enjoyment of the task itself. There are many intrinsic motivating basic desires that guide all of us: from the basics of food, shelter, and clothing to acceptance from our peers, spouse and family, we need order in our lives. As a husband and primary provider, I know that it is critical for me to give my wife and my sons that basic sense of well being and security. If I cannot provide security (and in a recessionary period all of us are stressed to the max to ensure that we provide such security for our family and employees),

48 SUCCESS FEBRUARY 2011

then they cannot feel secure in their own lives. People need to feel safe and loved.

Extrinsic motivation comes from outside of the individual. Common extrinsic motivations are rewards like money and grades, coercion, and threat of punishment. Competition is in general extrinsic because it encourages the participant to win and beat others. Achieving a promotion or getting a reward for sales person of the month are also extrinsic incentives. When we receive positive reinforcement for our hard work we are motivated to work harder and do better for ourselves, our families, and our companies.
Entrepreneurs cannot constantly motivate and keep track of an employee’s work on a daily basis. Goals are therefore an important tool for owners, since goals have the ability to function as a self-regulatory mechanism. Goals activate cognitive knowledge and strategies which allows owners to cope with the situation at hand. In this way, a goal is of vital importance because it facilitates an individual in focusing their efforts on a specified path.
“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”— Epictetus
People will perform better when they are committed to achieving certain goals. We are motivated by goals no matter how large or small. Positive emotions can broaden modes of thinking, which in turn
can improve ways of coping with a current stress. The entrepreneur in America is constantly fighting an uphill battle. Coping with the stresses of running a business can either make you or kill you. You might fail. So what? A winner must first know what failure is before he or she can enjoy success. The more obstacles you overcome, the stronger you become.
“They fail, and they alone, who have not striven.”—Thomas Bailey Aldrich
In life nothing is certain, nothing is perfect. Just rise above the challenge. Life is a game of chess, learn to live it wisely. The greater the challenges that we face, the more noteworthy the motivation will be in our lives.
“We are all inventors, each sailing out on a voyage of discovery, guided each by a private chart, of which there is no duplicate. The world is all gates, all opportunities.”—Ralph Waldo Emerson
We must be motivated to succeed in life. Failure might occur, but it is never permanent.Whateveryouarenotchanging, you are choosing to live by. Always move forward to the positive aspects of your life. Never accept mediocrity.
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” - Eccliastes 9:10

We explore, appraise, predict, and carry out on a continuing basis, programs of action and communication to attain the up-to-date public perception necessary for you to achieve your business goals. These may include advertising, marketing, financial, events, and public or government dealings. Success PR will develop and execute the business’s hard work to influence or change public perception. We will plan objectives, forecast budgeting, assist in recruiting and training staff and developing services.
Your marketing plan is a tool to reach target audiences, establish awareness, create or enhance image, and elicit action. Through a customized, collaborative process, we will work with you to develop a marketing plan which more closely identifies your market, your position, your competitors, your strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats. This plan includes:
• Situation Analysis • Marketing Objectives • Marketing Strategy • Budget • Goals and Objectives • Timeline & Action Plan • Action and Response Strategies • Effective Communication • Strategic Planning • Evaluation
Strategic planning lies at the root of all public relations and marketing efforts. It helps you define whom you want to reach, what you want to say, what channels you should use to deliver your message, how you will measure your results, and more. Without strategic planning, your outreach efforts may consist of nothing more than throwing a dart at the wall and hoping to hit something, anything.
Strategic planning allows you to define your strategic goals, create communication objectives to support the goals, and develop strategies and tactics to deliver on the promise. It also defines who will implement the activities, when, and at what cost.
SPR can help you implement a strategic plan to build your PR/marketing plan, develop a website, communicate effectively, promote an event, or launch a new company. Our process begins and ends with research. We define the current state of affairs, plan and introduce your project, and measure the outcome.
